Library / Media Center

Program Overview

The Library Media Center is the heart of the HPS literacy program.  The updated library was moved to a larger space in the lower concourse in 2002, and since then hundreds of books have been added for all reading levels.  Nine Internet-ready computers offer research capability, Accelerated Reader tests, and an on-line card catalog.  A full time media specialist serves as a resource for both teachers and students in all aspects of the curriculum.

Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is a computerized program to help students track their reading progress through the year.  Beginning in grade 3, students are tested to determine their reading levels and encouraged to check out books that are most appropriate.  Seventy-five percent of the books in the library are coded with level stickers.  Students read the book, then take the accompanying test to earn points throughout the year.  New AR books of all levels are constantly being added to the collection.

Extended Hours

The Library Media Center is open until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday through Friday during the school year.

Collection

The HPS Library Media Center currently holds approximately 12,000 books and many other items such as periodicals and educational videos for classroom use.  The book collection is constantly updated with new acquisitions of both fiction and nonfiction titles at all reading levels.

Policies

Students may check out two books at a time for a period of two weeks.  Books must be returned before the next book is checked out.  If a book is lost or damaged, the student is responsible for replacing it.
