Program Overview
The Haledon Gifted and Talented Education program provides enrichment to all kindergarten and first grade students with weekly classroom visits. Students in grades 2-8 who are identified as academically talented are offered twice weekly enrichment classes.
GATE strives to provide hands-on enrichment activities, extensions of the classroom curriculum, and challenging academic and creative programs as well as cultural experiences.
Activities
GATE students attend and participate in a variety of activities throughout the year, including: Quiz Bowl, Battle of the Books, Arts Symposium, Mini Model Congress, Crime Scene Investigators, Broadway show, Buehler Space Center, and debate competitions. In addition, GATE students provide many leadership services within the school, such as reading daily announcements, assisting with peer tutoring, and managing a Koffee Kart business.
Entrance Requirements
Students are selected each year based on a point matrix that examines four major areas: test scores, report card grades, teacher recommendations, and cognitive skills test results. Students must be re-evaluated each year, and students who, at any time, receive less than a B or who exhibit inappropriate behavior may be dropped from the program pending an administrative review.
